SASSA SRD says declined: what you can check and do

2026-11-08 06:06 · 3 min read

You check your SASSA SRD status and it says declined. That is hard to read when you were counting on the money. This post explains what the word can mean, what you can check, and how to avoid people who say they can fix it for a fee.

This is general information. Always confirm the details on the official SASSA SRD website, srd.sassa.gov.za, because rules and dates can change.

What is the SRD grant right now?

The Social Relief of Distress grant is R 370 a month. The Department of Social Development has said it is extended for 12 months, from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, and the amount did not go up. What happens after March 2027 has not been confirmed in the sources we checked, so do not plan around it.

How do I check my status?

  1. Go to the official SRD website: srd.sassa.gov.za.
  2. Choose the status check option.
  3. Enter your 13-digit ID number and the cellphone number you applied with.

The result is for a specific month. A month can show as declined while another month shows as approved, so look at each month on its own.

Why might my status say declined?

SASSA checks your details against other records. Some common reasons people report are:

  • SASSA found income in your bank account that was above the limit.
  • You are listed as getting another grant, UIF or NSFAS money.
  • Your ID number or cellphone number does not match the records.
  • The bank details you gave could not be confirmed.

These checks can be wrong. Money from a family member, or a payment that was only passing through your account, can look like income. If this happened to you, it does not mean you did anything wrong.

What can I do if I think it is wrong?

First, look at the reason shown next to the declined month. Then decide if the reason is true for you.

  • If it is true, there may be nothing to appeal. Your status can change in a later month if your situation changes.
  • If it is not true, you can appeal through the official SRD website. Keep proof, for example bank statements that show your real income.
  • Check the date of the decision and act quickly. Sources we found give different time limits for appeals, so we are not going to give you a number. Look at the appeal page on the official site for the current limit.

An appeal takes time. It can help to write down the date you appealed and the cellphone number you used.

Who can I trust for help?

When people are waiting for money, scammers appear. Be careful if someone:

  • asks you to pay to "unlock", "speed up" or "approve" your grant;
  • asks for your PIN, your banking password or a one-time code;
  • sends you a link in WhatsApp, Facebook or SMS that is not the official website.

SASSA does not charge to apply or to check your status. If a person says they know someone inside who can fix your application for a fee, do not pay. For more warning signs, read seven red flags of a fake earning app.

Other small ways to add to your income

A declined month can leave a gap. Nothing replaces a grant or a job. If you want something small on the side, apps that pay for surveys and offers exist, and Mocash is one of them. You can withdraw what you earn as airtime, data, electricity or vouchers. Earning from an app is small, slow and not guaranteed, and some rewards can take up to 30 days to be ready. Read how much you can actually earn from a money-making app before you decide if it is worth your time and data.
